Sound pollution happens when the loudness of sound around us is over 60 decibel. Decibel, is a unit which is used to measure intensity of the sound.
In 1943 some British researchers found that sound pollution can harm our health. It so happened that concord jet flight in order to land at British airport passed over the parliament house and due to its sound the window panes were broken. Sound is important and making sound is human tendency. But as per experts sound should not exceed 60 decibel . a person who is constantly living in an area with 70-80 decibel sound, he may loose his hearing power.
Apart from affecting hearing power, loud sound affect other body functions also. As per Australian doctor D Lehman, a sound of 40 decibel can awake a person from his sleep. A person who is working under 90 decibel sound may have memory loss and will show low efficiency to work. A person who works in 90 decibel sound area may complain of frequent reeling of head, headache and body ache. Loud sound also leads to depression. Not only this a sound more than 155 decibel can burn skin and at 180 decibel a person may die.
In a further study by doctor Lehman and his associates, it was found that at 120 decibel sound a rat succumbed to death. And a monkey died at 180 decibel. They also found an association with sound pollution and heart diseases.
In India for example Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata , Chennai , Kanpur are all affected by sound pollution. In Delhi almost 65% of the population live in 90-105 decibel sound, in Mumbai this percentage is 91. However, Chennai is little safe only 40 percent population lives in 80-100 decibel sound area.
Experts say truck, train, car horn produce 115 decibel sound. While normal chatting and light traffic produce 60 decibel sound. In engineering workshop it is 140 decibel. They concluded that given the current scenario around 40% people in this world are susceptible to hearing problems. it is thus important to make people aware of maintaining a low sound environment and the problems of sound pollution. There are some guidelines to stop sound pollution –
- While driving blow the horn when it is badly required. In marriage ceremonies, festivals and other celebrations do the encourage use of music bands.
- Play television and radio on low volume.
- Do not talk loudly while talking or chatting.
- Do not go to discotheque or any other place where they play high music.
- Avoid a crowded place, where there is too much noise.
- If we follow these guidelines we may get rid of sound pollution or at least minimize its effects.
