My cousin Bharti was married five years ago. She had a love marriage. She has always been the most active and jolly among all my cousins. Since last two years she has been visiting doctors for having a baby and the worse was that she started behaving a little abnormally. She used to shout unnecessarily, sometimes she used to say that she will die soon and to take her to the hospital. The result was her husband left her at our house saying she is impossible to handle.

Panic disorder is a mental disease. In this disease the person suddenly start feeling nervous and helpless. Sometimes the person may feel that he will die instantly but again within 30 mintues to an hour time he becomes normal.
The common symptoms are –
The patient may suddenly start feeling nervous and feel that he will die soon. He looses his control, start feeling suffocating and has breathing problems.
The patient may also feel as if his heart has stopped beating, his mouth is dry, he feel that he need to frequently visiting the loo. Many have cold sensation or no sensation in hands and feet.
Some experts think that it is genetic and the cause can be traced to some hormonal changes. It is also quite frequent in women than men. Married women are more prone to it than unmarried girls. Unsupportive husband, household work load, loneliness and family problems usually drag married women to panic disorder. It is also very common in nuclear family than large families. It can happen to any age group but the probability of this disease is usually in the age group of 20-25 years.
Not only this, frequent occurence of such condition can make the situation worse and it becomes difficult to council the patient. The patient start feeling that he will again have this problem and he starts living in fear of getting panic disorder mood swing. This situation is called agos phobia. In some cases the patient leaves his house and job .
It is also seen that person suffering from panic disorder start behaving as if they have some heart problems and insist on going for heart consultation and tests. The doctor, who is aware of his problem give glucose saline and within couple of mintues the person becomes normal. Although he thinks that it is due to glucose saline that his condition has improved.
Sometimes panic disorder can also lead to depression and then it becomes very difficult for the family members to handle the patient.
The good news is that panic disorder is curable. There are some medicines but like depression this needs active support of family members and the close friends of the patients.
