Very recently people have started being more conscious of what they eat in breakfast. Eating oats with milk/ water for health reasons is very recent. People have started understanding oats benefits. Although it has been cultivated since ages but it used to be considered as poor man’s grain. Oats and oats benefits have always been neglected due to abundance availability of wheat and rice. In India for instance the saints have been primarily oat eaters and are better known as ‘Joan’ or ‘jowar’.
Oats has good quantities of Carbohydrates and Proteinis and are a complete meal in itself therefore, many people consider oats as best breakfast option. Oats is consumed as ready oats flakes or granule, various forms are available in market, to which milk and sugar is added and cooked for a minute.
In India Joan (Oats) is roasted on low heat and then ground this is mixed with roasted wheat flour to which salt and water is added and consumed. Sometimes jaggery is added to make it sweet. It is low calorie food. A bowl of oats mixed with milk has only 130 Kcal. People with high blood pressure should consume oats regularly as it is beneficial for their health. Oats consist has folic vitamins and thus consuming oats is good for high blood pressure, diabetes, stomach related problems, problems in urine, kidney stone and loss of memory. It is high in magnesium which helps in proper absorption of glucose and secretion of insulin and thus it controls diabetes.
Oatmeal has beta- glucan which has good control on cholesterol. It is easily digested and hence it is recommended for aged people and people having weak digestive system. Oats has lactic acid, salicylic acid, phosphorus, potassium and calcium.
Oats have been used in many religious rituals since ages. In Sanskrit it is called ‘Yav’ it is produced in the USSR, America, Germany, Canada and India. Oats and wheat taste very differently but oats is lighter than wheat. Recently in a health journal ‘Nutrition’ a research on oats was published, wherein the scientist have found it highly effective in lowering bad cholesterol from blood. Oats help in lowering bad cholesterol and triglyceride in blood and thus prevent heart problems.
With Modern lifestyle the probability of having heart problems have increased, and the main culprit is the increase of bad cholesterol and triglyceride. Prevention is better than cure, and our food habit is very important. In a research conducted in China some people aged between 35 to 75 years were grouped in 10 groups who had high cholesterol and triglyceride but were not using any medicine. These people were given noodles, rice and bread along with their normal diet. One of the group of people were given 200 gram oats packets and were asked to eat 100 grams oats every day. The results collected, and analysed proved that people who were eating oats daily had slimmer waist and tummy, had lower cholesterol, and they saw an increase in good cholesterol.
