I used to wonder why our grandmother and mothers used to ask the first question to the new mother ……Was it a normal or caesarean delivery, every time they used to visit a relative or friend who has delivered a baby……and they used to feel happy if it was a normal delivery.
Nowadays women in India are opting for an operative delivery or caesarean section than normal delivery according to national statistics. The trend is higher in urban well off women compared to rural areas wherein women don’t have their say. The choice has been guided by ‘ no pain and hassle free ‘deliveries.
Caesarians are not surgeries to be performed in demand. The federation of obstetric and gynaecological society of India has listed criteria and recommendations for it.
However when the trend has been studied, it was found that the reason for surgery was not always medical. The maximum number of operations took place on weekdays during office hours. The date and time has been decided by patient and family member for personal reasons like convenience, career constraints, auspicious day ( this year for example it was 12-12-12).
Pain felt in course of natural delivery is time bound and recovery is rapid but in case of caesareans pain particularly backache after spinal anesthesia may persist for long. Mothers who has undergone caesarean surgery has to avoid oil, ghee and butter totally in their food. Studies have also shown that children born out of natural deliveries are more physically and emotionally strong.
All surgeries to be taken seriously can have complications. A caesarean is a major abdominal surgery and can cause bleeding, infection, UTI and adverse effects of anesthesia.
There is no magic pill for normal deliveries but yes there are time tested ways to follow and hope…….
1. Maintain a BMI (weight divided by height in metre squared) of 23.
2. Exercise actively before pregnancy for an hour a day like jogging, running, swimming.
3. Brisk walking for 30 mintues is recommended every morning and evening.
4. Drink 3 litres of water in a day.
5. Oil your body daily to maintain flexibility.
6. Choose your doctor carefully. Doctors have to wait for normal deliveries which is loss for there time.
Childbirth is a natural process, which has occurred through centuries. It is better for mother and child if we try to keep it that way.
