Indian food is known for its variety. No other country has so much variety in their cuisine. However if we ponder then we find that in most of the food Indians preparation they use ginger and garlic. As per Indian Ayurveda the usage of ginger and garlic dates back to many centuries and people have used it in cooking primarily for health reasons. Garlic for example was eaten raw or added in chutneys and served because it helps in keeping the body warm and help fight against viral cough and cold. Similarly ginger was used in curries to prevent acidity.
Today although we use ginger and garlic primarily for enhancing the taste of our food but the medicinal properties of these two spices needs to be highlighted.
Recently in a study in Israel it has been found that eating garlic not only helps in prevention of various diseases but it also controls our weight. In a study carried out in institute for high blood pressure it has been found that elicin found in garlic help to control weight. This study was done on animals and regular eating of garlic helped the researchers to keep their weight under control. This stud received appreciation as heavy weight doubles the possibility of inviting diseases like diabetes, heart disease etc.
Further research showed, Elicin also controls high blood pressure and controls cholesterol in blood. Garlic reduces LDL cholesterol in blood and increases good cholesterol HDL, In a new study it is found that eating a clove of garlic everyday reduces cholesterol by 10%. It also prevent blood clotting in arteries , which is one of the cause of high blood pressure and heart attacks.
Garlic also has calcium, phosphorus, potassium and iron . it has antiseptic characteristics and is known to increase immunity. Eating garlic prevent from heat stroke.
Similarly Ginger has been used as medicine since ages. It is used in raw as well as dry form. Ginger has carbohydrate protein, phosphorus and calcium. When used in cooking it enhances the taste and flavour of the food. Like garlic ginger is by nature warm and thus help to keep our body warm. In cold regions or in winter people have ginger tea.
Ginger is used in common cold and cough Chewing a piece of ginger helps in reliving sore throat. In many places ginger is crushed and then boil with basil and cloves to make tea, which is an excellent medicine to cure cough.
In pneumonia or influenza consuming ginger juice with honey s recommend.
Ginger is also known to control acidity problem. For this mix ginger juice with lemon juice and drink twice a day.
