In a study by national institute of occupational health it was seen that in India around 68% women wear high heels and out of total women population only 10 % women think about ergonomics of footwear before buying them.
As per the survey around 90% of women and girls who wear high heels have complains of pain in knees, back, ankles and shoulders, these are some of high heel problems women face. It has also been observed that among the age group of 12-18 years wearing high heels can cause high heel prblems like joint pain up to 20 % whereas in the age group of 20-39 years it goes up to 30-40 %. That means as the age increases high heel problems like back, knee and joint pains increase.
Experts say wearing high heels not only causes pain in back and knees but a prolonged use can deform the bones and this can affect normal walking, sitting and standing to a great extent. Stretching and tension in nerves of the lower portion of the body and accumulation of fat around waist area is also common because of high heels and in some cases the only option left is to undergo a knee transplant surgery.
In a study conducted in the orthopaedic department of Apollo hospital New Delhi, it has been found that in 70% cases for knee and back pain the age group is between18- 35 years and the majority are college going girls or working women. It is also found that in many cases the problem becomes very acute till they come to doctor and knee transplant is quite a cumbersome job as these artificial knees have a life span of maximum 20 years and so they require to go for one or two more such transplants later in life.
In another study conducted in Asian hospital of medical sciences, Bone department, it was observed that wearing high heels brings the entire weight of the body on feet and toes and thus the person feel pain in feet and toes and slowly it extends to ankles, knees, back and shoulders. As per the doctors we should try to wear flat footwear as far as possible as it help the feet and legs to carry the weight of the body properly. A footwear having 1-1 and ½ inch heel is still tolerable but beyond that wearing high heels should be discouraged.
Many young women argue that in some professions they need to look tall and thus they wear high heels like Air hostess, actresses, models and women in charge of front office.
