Our kidney is one of these essential parts and is responsible for removing toxic elements from our blood and expelling them from the body. The kidney also regulates our blood pressure and produces erythropoietin, which helps red blood cells multiply within the body. The kidney also stimulates vitamin D and helps absorb calcium into the body.
To keep our kidney healthy, it is important to keep blood pressure normal, as high or low blood pressure can affect the normal functioning of the kidney.
Diabetes is one cause of weak kidneys. According to a recent study done in the Fortis Kidney Hospital in Mumbai, around 65% of the 200 patients sampled either had diabetes before developing kidney problems or got it afterwards.
Kidney stones and urinary tract infections (UTI) are other contributing factors towards malfunctioning kidneys. To find out whether your kidneys are functioning normally, it is important to get urine tests, blood tests, and sonography tests.
Apart from this, people who have kidney problems or such issues should respect the following precautions:
- Keep blood pressure and diabetes under control.
- Do not consume medicines unnecessarily and take them only after consulting a doctor. Overdosing on paracetamol, antibiotics, or painkillers can affect the kidney.
- Try to use salt in limited quantities. An adult should have only 0.5 mg of salt per day.
- Avoid alcohol, as it has been found to be the most common cause for kidney failure.
- Include food rich in calcium into your diet, such as fish, curds, cottage cheese, almonds, peanuts, coconuts, and soybeans.
- Eat bananas, potatoes, and corn flour, as they are rich in potassium, magnesium, and vitamin B. Avoid meat and animal protein if you have any sort of kidney problem. Similarly, avoid foods that have high oxalate levels, such as green leafy vegetables, apple juice, grape juice, and instant coffee, as these increase your chances of developing kidney stones.
- Drink water, as it helps remove toxins from the body.
- Avoid eating oily, spicy, or rich foods.
