Diabetes is a modern lifestyle disease which (still) is incurables. Diabetes is mostly a result of wrong food habit and indigestion of glucose. As a result, there is excess of glucose in the body, which starts coming out through urine. Some time ago this disease was restricted only to old people, but now even children are reporting this problem. The solution is to control the intake of glucose rich food and have food that will help in controlling the blood sugar.
As per a recent research diabetes patients should only eat vegetarian food. Non-vegetarian food such as chicken or fish can be eaten once in 2 weeks to fulfill ones protein requirement. Having Non-vegetarian food regularly can cause digestion problem, Since human body take more time to digest proteins. People suffering from diabetes should have more green vegetables in their diet. Bitter vegetables such as bitter gourd, fenugreek, bel fruit & neem leaves should be consumed regularly.
Food should be low in calories. Dry fruits, fruits, whole cereals, wheat and milk products are beneficial. Avoid sugar, jaggery, glucose, sweets, canned juices, jam, potato, rice and food rich in carbohydrate. Instead eat wheat, gram & cornflour.
Use minimum oil in your food. Use either mustard, sesame or soya bean oil for cooking.
According to food experts sprouted cereals and lentils, fruits have high fibre content, and they are good for people suffering from diabetes. Lentils have Soluble Fiber (such as pectin) which prevent the absorption of glucose in the intestine thus it is more beneficial than eating cereals for diabetic patients . As per studies it has been found that when lentils germinate their level of pectin increases.
In a study conducted by Canadian researchers kuttu (buckwheat) flour is beneficial in diabetes. The study found that due to regular consumption of kuttu flour the level of glucose can be reduced by up to 19 percent. Scientist from the university of Manitola conclude that the number of people having diabetes is increasing & kuttu flour will prove very beneficial for such people.
As per Dr Calo Teller kuttu flour not only decreases the level of glucose in the body, but it also decreases the chances of having kidney problems and heart problems due to diabetes. In kuttu flour ( buckwheat flour) the proportion of Inositol is more which controls the excess glucose in the body. Apart from changing food habit a diabetic patients should follow these simple rules –
- Exercise regularly.
- Fix a time for eating and keep a gap of 3-4 hours in between meal.
- Drink water.
- Try to control weight.
- If you are going out of station then consult your doctor regarding necessary precautions and emergency medicines.
- Examine blood sugar, weight, blood pressure every month.
