By definition arthritis means joint inflammation and it is used to describe many different diseases and conditions that affects joints and tissues surrounding it. Arthritis makes its impact on people differently.
Two of the most common forms are osteoarthritis (OA) and Rheumatoid arthritis ( RA). Both have different causes, risk factors and effect on body. While osteoarthritis pain stiffness or inflammation most frequently appears in hip, knees and hands, rheumatoid commonly involves hands and wrists but can also act on areas of the body other than joints.
Some of the common effects of both types are:
Effect on heart : People with rheumatoid arthritis have twice the risk of having heart problem as compared to those who does not. This condition creates a low grade inflammation that damages the blood vessels and thus increase the risk of heart attack, stroke and heart failure.
Effects on lungs : the most common condition due to arthritis are inflammation in lungs’ lining, which causes pain while breathing, scarring of tissues and increase chances for emphysemia ( lung diseases) even in nonsmokers.
Effects on nerves : some arthritis patients get nerve damage that causes burning sensation in feet and hands. Also when blood vessels get inflammated the nerves don’t have enough blood supply so it advances the problem.
Effect on skin : If there is inflammation in blood vessels going to skin, it can create rashes, nodules or skin ulcer.
Effect on wrist : inflammation in the joints due to arthritis pushes the nerve that runs from the forearm to the wrist. And thus people feell numbness, tingling, weakness and sharp pain in arm.
Thus we can understand how arthritis can affect the daily life of a patient in number of ways.. the modern treatment is not able to treat the problem completely. Pain killers taken for pain have shown side effects. So there is a need for a therapy that is long lasting and has no side effects. In this direction one can find ancient ayurvedic, unani and yoga therapy very useful. They do not have any side effects. Ayurveda proposes use of natural substances that will flush out toxins from the body and change in food habits and hence the patient will get relief. Whereas yoga proposes different posture exercises that help in controlling the disease. Beside providing relief from stiffness pain and swelling the effects of arthritis on other parts of the body are eliminated to a great extent.
