The cases of depression are rising. As per experts, 5 out of every 1000 people are suffering from depression.Depression is a disease which brings mental disorder.
The usual symptoms of depression are sleeping disorder, feeling low, sense of insecurity, sadness, lack of interest in any work and loss of appetite. If some of these symptoms are persisting over a period of 15-20 days then the person is said to be under depression.
There are various causes of depression –
Biological reason – depression can be due to genetic reasons. If there are incidences of depression in the family history then the probability of the person having depression is high. A happy parents bring up happy children and a depressed parents and family environment can have adverse effects on the children.
Situational reasons – This is the main cause of depression. Today we all live in Darwin’s World of survival of the fittest and this sheer competition makes few people, who succeed, happy.There are many men & women who consider themselves a failure & may exhibit symptoms of depression. Depression occurs when we cannot manage the situations of our life .
Working women, for example, fall under depression when they cannot manage both work and home. Homemakers too can fall under depression when their husband and childrens are away and they spend a lot of time alone.
Emotional Reasons – we may feel depressed when we do not get the thing that we want so dearly – be it money, status, love, friendship or any other thing.Often boys and girls may fall under depression due to loss of love.
Physical reasons – there are some people who have personality disorder. They are susceptible to depression. These people are very narrow minded, they are not very social and like to be in their own world.
The good thing is depression can be treated. There has been many researches in the field of gene therapy which will be used in future to treat depression.There are many medicines which help in controlling the mental imbalance. Such medicines should only be used after consulting a doctor.
Consultation with a psychologist is the most common way to treat depression. Family play an important role. A little support from family can make the whole treatment easy and swift.
