Ear is one of the five sense organs. Ears help us to hear sound. Our response is guided by what we hear and see. The importance of hearing is much more for a blind person. His responses are guided primarily by sound.
It is also known that, with age our vision and ability to hear diminishes. Thus it is important to take care of our ears so that they function well when we grow old .Irritation, discharge of pus and difficulty in hearing are signals of problems in your ears, and it calls for doctor’s intervention.
Some people continuously hear a ringing sound. It is called ‘Tinnitus’. Similarly, some people hear a sound similar to a soft whistle. This usually happens to people living in a noisy place for a long period. At times this can also happen due to accumulation of dirt in your ears.
Some people feel heaviness in their ears when they suddenly enter a cold room. This is due to swelling in the Eustachian tube. You also feel a slight discomfort when you swallow any thing or yawn. These are all signals that there is some problem with your ears.
The first step that you can take is to keep your ears clean. To clean ears properly you should know a little about the structure of your ears. The ear is divided in three parts. The outermost part has a gland which discharges a wax like secretion. It protects the skin of the ear canal, assists in cleaning and lubrication, and also provides some protection from bacteria, fungi, insects and water. With time it comes out towards the outer surface and is commonly known as “Earwax“.
Most of us use cotton buds to clean our ears, which is wrong. In some people the secretion(wax) can turn into solids and it is impossible to take them out with cotton buds. There are many ear drops that are available in the market which can dissolve these dirt and make it easier to clean. However it is advisable to consult a doctor , who can recommend the ear drop that is suitable for you.For your children, it is advised that your doctor cleans his ears since your child’s ears are very delicate.
Ear problems are very common among swimmers. In some people the membrane inside the ears develop swelling due to infection.People who work in areas with loud noise such as factories, commercial harbours or Discotheque are more likely to develop hearing problem.
