Generally banana is considered as poor man’s fruit as it is cheaply available throughout the year. However as per Indian mythology banana is associated with wisdom. It is said that Lord Vhehaspati resides on banana plant and thus many Hindus offer prayer to banana plant on Thursdays. Even in any religious festivals the ‘bhog’ ( offering) is served on banana leaf.
If we talk about the nutrition value then banana has carbohydrate which gives us energy. One banana has 27 gram of carbohydrate and protein which gives 116 kcal. Hence if you are feeling extremely hungry or just after morning exercises eat one banana and it will give you instant energy.
It also has iron, calcium and phosphorus. Raw banana has more iron and fibre than ripe one. The proof is you cut one banana is keep it open, within few mintues it will become dark. Anemic people (who have lack of iron and hemoglobin) are advised to eat one boiled raw banana. It is also recommended for expecting mothers to meet their requirement of more iron. Iron help in increasing folic acid which is required for development of babies.
It has almost no cholesterol and the water content is 70% hence it s recommended for heart patients.
It also has some magnesium, sodium, copper and potassium. Infact banana has more potassium than other fruits. Potassium help in bringing flexibility in muscles. Potassium also helps in high blood pressure and thus it is highly recommended to people having high blood pressure.
Banana has pectin and fibre thus it helps in constipation. pectin works wonder in loose motions and bleeding in stool. If you have loose motion problem then eat boiled raw banana with soft rice twice a day.
Moreover banana usually suits to all and the percentage of people having allergies or acidic reaction is very lass. The pulp is very soft and hence can be given to babies five months onwards. Even old people having teeth problems can easily have banana.
Banana is also very universal in its usage. It can be mixed in salads, milk shakes, desserts, icecream and custard. Raw banana is used to make curries and snacks like pakora and chips.
Banana and milk make good breakfast substitute.
