We all think that any bacteria in our body is harmful and whenever we get sick we have antibiotics to get rid of the problem completely. Antibiotics are important to fight against bacterial disease but it should be taken after consulting any doctor and should be taken in the limited quantity only. The general thinking is that bacteria is harmful for our health. But it is not true. Only few bacteria are harmful, some do not affect our health, in fact some are beneficial also. We all know that soil is full of bacteria and these bacteria help the plants to grow. If we use too much pesticides then they will die and hence we find lack of nutrition in foods today. Pesticides not only kill the bacteria but it gets accumulated on the surface of fruits and vegetables and cause cancer and other chronic disease
Some bacteria found in intestine and stomach help in digestion they eat away the bad food in our stomach, which is not taken out by excretion. And thus help us to be healthy. For example lactobacillus acidophilus is found in intestines help in gastrointestinal problems and lactose intolerance. Bacillus subtilis help in fighting off diarrhea.
Antibiotics pose major threat to these good bacterial population as they kill all of them without differentiating good or bad. The result can be devastating depending on strength and frequency of application of antibiotics.
The infusion of bad bacteria can happen from number of ways like from food or touching. However sources of good bacteria is less and they take time to again regenerate. By the time bad bacteria make us sick and then we have digestion problems like gastric problems, acidity and other diseases.
For expecting mothers, it is important to avoid antibiotics as mothers transform good bacteria to their babies while delivering through a normal delivery which makes the baby immune from innumerable diseases and usage if antibiotics during pregnancy can disturb the entire process. that way not only the present but future generation will also be devoid of good bacteria
To curtail this problems many practitioners are advocating probiotics , which is infused from fermented food like yoghurt or in the form of supplements. Or advising a good bacteria rebuilding strategy after the application of antibiotics.
